In many cases, 'music as an outlet for personal worries and fears' is one of the Top 3 reasons to form a band. This group's motivation though wasn't to get rid of their emotional ballast but to embrace all ups and downs of human life, take them by the hand and dance with them. Lyrics that move. Music that makes people want to dance - this is I AM CEREALS. They showcase the hipness of love and that anger is an elemental appetite grooving in all of us. And their dealing with angst is brazenly easy. I AM CEREALS - a synonym for "I am serious" when it comes to musical passion and collective dancing.
The pulse was released by Ben Martin in 2006 when he relalized the blood running through his artistic veins wasn't only to be melancholic indie-pop. At the same time - and maybe for a reason - members of a long gone band project made plans to connive again. Since Martin didn't want to start yet another solo project, those newly awoken contacts seemed to fit rather nicely. In the beginning of 2007 he gathered a wish list of friends and musicians he wanted to work with, now known as I AM CEREALS:
Bauchklang-Beatboxer Gerald Huber (Vocals), Ben Martin (Vocals, Guitars, Bass), Christoph Richter (Bass), Daniel Letschka (Drums), Felix Teiretzbacher (Backing Vocals, Saxophone, Keyboards) and Marcus Hufnagl (Keyboards).
In the summer of 2008 the band released the song "French Parade" as a single - the story of three young women who know what they want and take no detour to get their point across. On may 8th the complete works of "I AM CEREALS." - uniting all fears and joys of human existence - will be brought to the light of day on Violet Noise Records.
This boundless affirmation of life goes along with dance-animating Trash Pop-Melodies. A little bit of 80s, lots of Groove and Electro make the joyous part of the album. Grave themes are treated with a smile without being ironic.
All in all "I AM CEREALS." can be seen as an encounter between childlike curiousity and adult experiences. And after 50 minutes every burnt child might realize, that emotions maybe don't need to be handled with care but with indulgence.
So, are you cereals?
